X5 vs GLE: Performance Specs

When it comes to pressing down on the accelerator when you’re on the highway, there’s only one SUV that stands above the others. The BMW X5 comes with a standard 3.0L V6 engine, capable of delivering up to 335 horsepower. It comes with twin-scroll turbocharger technology with variable valve control functionality to give you precise gear changes as you move through the 8-speed Sport Automatic transmission.

The Mercedes-Benz GLE may be powerful, but it can’t quite match up to what the X5 is capable of. The 2.0L 4-cylinder engine only makes 255 horsepower. So, whether you’re on the highway or city streets, there’s little question that you’ll get more power out of the X5.

Of course, this takes into consideration the entry-level editions of these vehicles. There are other models available, as there are a few different BMW X5 trims and Mercedes-Benz GLE trims to select from. The BMW X5 xDrive50i comes with the xDrive, BMW’s all-wheel drive system, allowing you to drive a vehicle that provides a better grip on the roads with all-wheel drive capability.

This engine combines a pair of turbochargers with variable valve control and high-precision direct injection, delivering up to 456 horsepower in the process. The X5 M50i, the performance edition of this vehicle, comes with a BMW M TwinPower Turbo V8 that brings 523 horsepower for truly pavement-shaking performance.

The Mercedes-Benz GLE family maxes out with the GLE 580, which makes 483 horsepower with its V8 engine. It’s certainly a lot of power, but it’s not quite as powerful as what the X5 is capable of.

BMW X5 vs Mercedes-Benz GLE: Interior Amenities

Inside the BMW X5, you’ll find a long list of interior amenities that can make drives more intuitive and engaging. You’ll find the same inside the Mercedes-Benz GLE. Which of these SUVs, though, gives you more bang for your buck?

In each of these luxury SUVs, the power front seats set the stage for every drive, with power side bolsters for thigh support and 4-way lumbar support providing a reprieve for your back and spine. Thanks to their standard memory functionality, each of these vehicles will even remember the settings you want, even if someone else takes the wheel for an extended period.

However, when it comes to interior amenities, there’s one standard offering the X5 has that the GLE does not: a panoramic moonroof. The power tilt/slide roof in the GLE may let some fresh air in, but the panoramic roof extends to the second row in the X5. If you’re driving the GLE, you won’t get that kind of capability for your passengers.

X5 vs GLE: Dimensions

With space for five passengers in each of these vehicles, you can bring the entire family along for the ride. Will you be able to ensure that everyone is comfortable, though? Inside the BMW X5, drivers and front passengers have access to 40.7 inches of headroom and 38.7 inches of headroom in the second row.

Case in point, the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE: It comes up a bit shy of the X5 front headroom at 40.5 inches, but shrinks as you move to the back, with just 36.9 inches of headroom for those in the second row. That’s a cramped ride in comparison.

BMW X5 vs Mercedes-Benz GLE Safety

If you’re considering a luxury SUV, you may be giving thought not just to what your daily drives to work might look like, but also what weekend adventures with the family may look like. In this sense, you may be giving plenty of consideration to BMW X5 vs. Mercedes-Benz GLE safety features as you search for the vehicle that will provide the best protection for you and yours.

The X5 comes standard with the unique Active Driving Assistant. As the name suggests, this active safety suite provides assistance as you drive. Use the following features to your advantage:

  • Daytime Pedestrian Protection
  • Frontal Collision Warning with City Collision Mitigation
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Active Blind Spot Detection
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert

The Mercedes-Benz GLE driver assistance suite includes features like:

  • Active Distance Assist
  • Active Brake Assist with Cross-Traffic Function
  • Active Lane Change Assist
  • Active Speed Limit Assist

The BMW Active Protection System is there to help, too. This system can detect an imminent collision, and prepares by pretensioning the seat belts. This system also closes the windows and moonroof, and activates post-crash braking to protect you. While the Mercedes-Benz GLE does include emergency call service in case of an accident, it doesn’t come with this active protection to keep you safe in the event of a collision. That’s something you’ll want to keep in mind as you search for that next car.
